From March through August 2014 we created a series of shoots featuring
fashion models and UK vintage automobiles from the 30's, 40's, 60's and
60's. Each model was dressed in vintage fashion appropriate to the year
of the vehicle. The top images were then collected and put into a
stylish 2015 Calendar.

Busy Busy by Alexandra Gunnoe
I know this blog is kind of rushed and my excuse is that I'm really, really busy. Beyond busy. I'm moving to Bristol in the next few weeks and have been running around tying things up. So instead of writing detailed accounts of our last two shoots, for now I will just post some of my favorite photos from them. Both were a lot of fun and I got some images that will really complement our Calendar, which should be ready at the beginning of September.

"Jalopnik Article" by Alexandra Gunnoe
So pleased to share this bit of press we received! I’m a few days late with the news but this
weekend has been jam-packed with work and shoots. Los Angeles-based writer, Jason Torchinsky,
put together this article for us on Jalopnik detailing The Vintage Bus Project.
I hadn’t previously publicized the intent to turn
these fashion shoots into a 2015 calendar but now you know! We anticipate finishing the project in August
and the calendar will be available for pre-sale in early September, hard copies
available shortly after. Then on the 5th
of October 2014 we will be selling the calendars at the West of EnglandTransportation Collection’s Open Day, a time when thousands come from all over
England to view the incredible collection of vintage buses.

"The Halfway Mark" by Alexandra Gunnoe Reviews
Right now I'm gearing up for a 50’s Youth Culture themed photo shoot with
a model, Brooke, I met on a random bus in the middle of the country. I wrote about that meeting in a previous post, "Girl on a Bus".
Can you believe it was
her first shoot? She did such an amazing
job and I’m excited to get her in front of my camera again. I'm also looking forward to working with a new Hair and Makeup Artist, Connie, as well as Kate from Fashion Farmer and Dan Shears, from the West of England Transportation Collection. Here's a mood board I quickly put together this morning. It's not pretty or balanced but hopefully you'll get an idea of what we're doing. Aren't the clothes Kate chose fabulous?
It's crazy to realise this will be our 5th vintage bus shoot. That means we will be halfway done. And the remaining vehicles are really exciting so the momentum is still building. I can't quite figure out what I want to do with this beautiful firetruck. That one has to be a very special shoot. What do you think?

"On a Leyland" Somerset Photo Shoot & Retouching Tutorial by Alexandra Gunnoe
The outcome of this 60’s inspired shoot was one of my
favorites. Instead of shooting in Devon,
we took the bus out to Quantock Hills, Somerset and photographed our model,
Charlotte, there. It was gorgeous, sunny
day and the ride in the 1958 Leyland was smooth and enjoyable. I was the only passenger riding in the bus
and I have to say, you get a lot of attention driving through England in a
vintage automobile. Lots of people wave and honk at you. I felt like a rock star.
The team met up at Kate Sly’s Fashion Farmer styling studio
to prep Charlotte for the shoot while Dan, the Proprietor of the West of England Transportation Collection, and I attempted to get the bus to the location. We got stuck along the way due to being too
large to pass under a bridge and had to find a new route around to Quantock Hills. From there we faced challenges of
low trees and steep hills, but we finally made it and ended up having a very
successful shoot.
To enhance the photos, I added a tiny bit of blue to the
shadows in Lightroom, in addition to basic colour-correction. For the interior shots, I wanted to recreate
that vintage look so I then opened the images in Photoshop and after adjusting
the levels, etc. I used two actions I’ve created in the past for these types of
shoots. Basically, the light leak actions
add a light salmon colour to the highlights and a soft teal to the shadows. I then masked the action away from the model’s
face and corrected her skin tone. I always have to edit myself and use only 5-10%
opacity on my actions. Too many times I
think I have it right, take a step away from the computer and return to see
that my image looks over-processed. To
bring the detail of the trees back I reduced the exposure of the original image
and opened it separately in Photoshop. I
then did a rough selection of the windows with the pen tool and pasted it into
my new composite. With my opacity and
flow set to 30%, I gently brushed the trees back into my image.
Finally, I liquified the model’s dress, dodged and burned,
added a soft glow to the interior bus lights and adjusted my curves layer and
contrast. Here is an example of one
image straight out of camera and then the “after” retouched version. When these vintage bus shoots have been
completed I will go back and start adding in-depth retouching tutorials, but if
you have any questions, please contact me on my website and I’ll do my best to
answer you promptly.
Back to the shoot… here’s a brief clip of Nina touching up
Charlotte’s makeup on the bus, as well as some of my favorite images from the
day.

first post about The Vintage Bus Project, as well as check out my website http://alexandragunnoe.com

"50's Prom Night Gone Wrong" (Behind-the-Scenes) by Alexandra Gunnoe
Our 50’s Inspired Prom shoot on the 5th of April
went so well. There wasn’t much stress
involved, as we had all worked together before and I had a great feeling about
Charli, our latest model. Again, this shoot took place at Dan
Shears’ West of England Transportation Collection in Winkleigh, Devon. The theme of this project was a prom night
gone wrong. It centers around a teenage
girl who was so excited to go to prom, only to end up in tears and catching the
bus home alone.
Despite the crazy wind, we were able to pull off some great
images. I’ve included some of my
favorites as well as a behind-the-scenes film showing the creative team
prepping the model, deciding on the fashion as well as clips from the actual
photo shoot.
And if you get a chance, check out “My Bubba & Mi”, who
is credited with the soundtrack for the film.
Their music is amazing!
